Mull – May

The May 2022 Trip has just one place available left. Bookings are now being taken for the 2023 trip.

Otter with Ballen WrasseI would like to invite you on this 8 day/7 night residential workshop on the  Scottish island of Mull running from Saturday to Saturday in May next year. There are just three available places.

Puffin With Mouth Open (1 of 1)

The workshop will include:

  • 3 hour boat trip to photograph white tailed eagles in flight and hunting. Dolphins, porpoise, otters, gannets plus other sea birds are regularly seen.  I share with you all the camera settings and lens choice you’ll need in order to get sharp, well composed photos. If you want to photograph more WTEs, you have the option to book a second trip on this boat (for a small fee).
  • There is an option to charter the boat (for an additional fee) to photograph more white tailed eagles and aquatic mammals. The tour operator works with us directly to get the best photographs. Max  4 people.
  • A visit to the Treshnish Isles of Staffa and Lunga to photograph Fingal’s Cave and the wildlife on these islands. Our trip onto Lunga has the option (for a small fee) to continue into the evening (long after most people have left the island) with the warm sunlight illuminating the puffins as they look after their young in the burrows.
  • Some of the wildlife you may encounter include golden eagles and other birds of prey, puffins and other sea birds, otters, dolphin, deer, moths and much more.
  • Whilst this is predominantly a wildlife workshop, there will be opportunities to photograph the rugged landscapes on Mull.
  • You’ll also get the opportunity to use your macro equipment to photograph moths (with the use of my moth trap), flowers including orchids and bluebells), insects, lichen, etc.

  • Accommodation is for seven nights in a lovely cottage within the Salen/Aros area  including breakfast and some lunches. Some lunches, evening meals and drinks are extra. Please ensure that any special dietary needs or allergies are indicated at the time of booking. There’s no single supplement and everyone will have their own bedroom.
  • Transportation whilst on the workshop is in a very comfortable 4×4 Ford Ranger with ample space for all your photographic gear.

  • Should time allow, I’ll also be giving advice on field craft skills, the use of Lightroom  Photoshop, improving your workflow, use of filters, using your camera whilst photographing wildlife, macro and landscapes along with the chance to review your photographs taken each day.
  • If you want to learn a new technique such as focus stacking or high speed flash to freeze action, this workshop can be tailored to suit your needs.
  • The itinerary will depend upon the weather though each day’s location is usually chosen during the previous evening. Most locations are easily accessible, require only a short walk and are best suited to the abilities of the group. The trip on the Treshnish Isles can be somewhat difficult especially for those who aren’t fit or a little unsure with their footing when walking over shoreline rocks.
  • This workshop is generally based on outdoor photography rather than indoor learning. The amount of teaching is inversely proportional to the amount of good weather we’ll have and the wildlife seen. However, if the weather is against us, the daily activities will be replaced with something equally suitable.
  • There aren’t any ‘tripod holes’ on my workshops and the wildlife won’t be waiting for us. I believe we have to work hard to get the very best photographs and it’s far better to earn the right to be a wildlife photographer rather than to just take photographs of wild animals. There are no guarantees that the wildlife will turn up, though on Mull, it usually does.
