I would like to invite you on this 8 day/7 night residential workshop in a remote location within the Scottish highlands approximately one hour’s drive west of Fort William or Glencoe, running from Saturday 28th May to Saturday 4th June 2022. Future trips in 2022 and 2023 have a maximum of three available places and dates can be arrange to suit yourself.
Some of the wildlife to see and photograph are pine marten, badgers, red squirrels, red deer, foxes, voles, a variety of birds and moths. Golden eagle, white tailed eagle, buzzard and otter may be found in the area but these won’t be our highest priority although if we saw them, we will always make a detour. The itinerary depends upon the weather though each day’s location is usually chosen the previous evening. Most locations are easily accessible, only require only a short walk and will be adapted to suit the abilities of the group.
There may also be opportunities to photograph sunsets, seascapes, rock pools, riverscapes, lochs and Harry Potter’s Hogwart’s Express. We’ll make use of my portable bird hides, the moth trap and I’ll explain how to use high speed flash for freezing in-flight action and focus stacking to achieve greater depth-of-field when using wide apertures.
This workshop is for intermediate or advanced photographers who have a good range of photographic equipment including a highly spec’d DSLR camera body or two (mirrored or mirrorless), wide angle, macro and long telephoto lenses. Your ideal kit would also include a tripod, flash guns, wireless remote control, weatherproof camera cover, camouflage clothing, memory cards and batteries.
The accommodation is in a remote cottage in a forest in the Scottish highlands between Fort William and Mallaig. It comprises two good sized twin bedrooms, one bathroom (with shower), conservatory, kitchen, utility room, living room and parking for four cars. Due to the cottage layout, there’s no option to have an en-suite bathroom. Breakfasts are included in the workshop. All meals are on a ‘cook them yourself’ basis though we may eat out as and when the situation arises. Please ensure that any special dietary needs or allergies are indicated at the time of booking.
There is an option to take a day trip to Mull to photograph White Tailed Eagles, otters, bluebells, plus a variety of birds and landscapes. Because of the popularity of photographing the eagles, this option needs to be selected at the time of booking your trip and is only available between April-September. This all day trip leaves the cottage at around 06:15 and arrives back around 19:00 hours and costs £130. Note that for it to go ahead, all clients are to book this trip.
What is included in the workshop:
- Transportation whilst on the workshop is in a comfortable 4×4 vehicle with ample space for all your photographic gear.
- Seven nights accommodation, breakfast, shared twin bedroom and a shared bathroom.
- Time to photograph the wildlife seen on the workshop.
- Photo critic sessions as time allows in the evening or in spells of really bad weather.
- Your guarantee that if you or we have to cancel due to Covid-19 or the government prevents the trip from taking place, you can rebook a later date or cancel as required.
What’s not included:
- Return travel to and from the cottage.
- Lunches, evening meals and drinks.
- Photographic equipment and suitable travel insurance. This is primarily a photographic workshop though advice on how to use PS or LrC can be given if time allows or all attendees desire the information.
There won’t be any ‘tripod holes’ on this workshop and the wildlife won’t be waiting for us. I believe we have to work hard to get the very best photographs and it’s far better to earn the right to be a wildlife photographer rather than to just take photographs of wild animals. There are no guarantees that the wildlife will turn up, though it usually does.
The cost of this exciting workshop is just £995 with a non-refundable deposit of £250. All prices are per person. Balance due two months before the workshop.
