About Me

JMS with EF800

Thank you for visiting my website. I hope you enjoy the photographs and you receive enough inspiration to take quality photos of your own, maybe come on a workshop or even buy a print or two.

I became interested in wildlife as a teenager whilst watching David Attenborough’s wildlife programmes and I fell in love with photography following a holiday to The Gambia in the early 90s photographing weaver birds, mudskippers & mammals. I became an active member of the local camera club (Wigan Photographic Society) and enjoyed much success winning awards in the club along with several national and international awards. I was a member of Blackburn Camera Club for 7 years and a member of the prestigious Wigan 10 Foto-Club for 4 years helping them receive the FIAP Gold Medal for finishing 2nd best club in the world in the FIAP World Cup and winning the Maurice Dorikens Trophy for the most consistent club in the world three times. During that time, my images helped the club win the PAGB PDI Championship, the PAGB Print Championship, the L&CPU Annual Print Exhibition and other events.

I’ve been running tours and workshops scaling from 1-to-1 up to 15 clients since the early 2000s to locations such as Ardnamurchan, Farne Isles, Glencoe, Krakow, Lake District, Loch Ness, Marrakesh, Moidart, Mull, Northumberland, Risley Moss, Sherwood Forest, Skomer and Yorkshire Dales.

My favourite genres are wildlife, crazy macro, rock bands and landscapes though I’m happy photographing anything that moves and anything that doesn’t! For the technophobes, my kit includes the mirrorless Canon EOS R3 and various Canon f2.8 lenses. Will I get a Canon EOS R1? Well the specs do look good…

If you want me to speak at your camera club on the use of Adobe Lightroom, Scottish Wildlife or Wildlife In Botswana please read this or contact me. Along with the lectures, I’ve been an accredited judge within the Lancashire & Cheshire Photographic Union (L&CPU) for quite a number of years bringing my own distinct style with constructive critique and a little humour to each event judged. I also currently hold four photographic distinctions:

  • LRPS – Licentiateship of the Royal Photographic Society
  • EFIAP – Excellence Fédération Internationale de l’Art Photographique (International Federation of the Art of Photography)
  • DPAGB – Distinction of the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain
  • BPE3* – British Photographic Exhibition awards

I now live in Cockermouth, Cumbria and happy to judge or speak via Zoom or in person at your camera club. I’ll visit the L&CPU, NCPF, SPF and YPU photographic federations in person but ideally to a club that’s within a 90 minute drive. As I am about to start my BPE judging career, I am equally happy judging at national level within the UK.
